Mission: Fuel Up for Fun!

June 6th, 2010

Awesome! Today I ran my first 5k and Julianne & Johanna ran in the kids dash.  The event benefited Hope Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald house in Oak Lawn, IL.  I’m not a big fan of McDonald’s, but I love their charity of the Ronald McDonald houses.  We used their hospitality quite a bit when Johanna was in the hospital for a month after her first seizure.  It’s only fitting that I would support their cause…especially during this week – the week we eliminated her prescription seizure meds!

Preparing for today was fun!  I don’t mean the running part.  That was not my favorite part in the beginning.  However, packing up for the day was so easy and the girls were so good.  That’s what happens when you fuel up for fun without using artificial junk!

This morning:

People ask me all the time if I really take the time to make sure that we have healthy snacks/options around 99% of the time the answer is YES! In fact, my mom and husband ate breakfast right from our van console…which was not stocked for today – the picture above is how it always looks!

It’s ready to go with:

C’mon, you can do it!  Get in the habit of keeping the healthy stuff in the car and the drive thru crankies will be a thing of the past!

Mission: Change your diet again, again and again

May 27th, 2010

I love it when I come across something that inspires me to write….right now!

So here’s the statement that was an “AHA moment”, as Oprah would call it.

The way of eating that works for you today may not work for you six months or six years down the road. It’s important to change your diet as often as necessary… to match your body, lifestyle, and taste buds.

I mean really, let’s think about this…how many times have you said – “I’m going to have to go back to the weekly meeting place where I counted points because that’s how I lost weight the last time”.  OR “I’m going back to low-carb because it made me feel better.”  OR “Ten years ago when I felt good I only ate fruit.”

Whatever your “thing” was then, probably isn’t what your “thing” is now.  I KNOW mine is not and I think I’ve felt bad for a while that I couldn’t just repeat steps I did before to feel healthy and then magically everything would be back the way it should be…or maybe it just shouldn’t be that way now.

Seriously, do I think that after having two children in two years, turning 35, going through traumatic events and keeping up with my work-at-home Mom activities that I need to eat the same way as when I was single or newly married or working on my feet for 10 hours?  NOPE.  It’s time for a reality check.

Our diets need to change to meet our needs and our body changes, but WAIT, isn’t this a blog about kids. YEP, this statement got me thinking…why do we expect our kids to eat the same way they did 6 months ago?  They are growing too!  Their tastebuds are changing!  Their activities are changing!  Their awareness around them is changing!

So now I’m even more motivated to switch it up in our house, not only for me, but for my kids.  Time to get some new cookbooks, make some new grocery lists, take time to learn a few new recipes and really dig into some new flavor for a great summer of eating and fun!

Mission: Get with the Program

March 31st, 2010

Are you one of those parents that feeds your children better than you feed yourself.  You still sneak the 500 calorie latte or enjoy extra ice cream after they go to bed.  Ah, been there, done that, but not anymore!

Since starting the cleansing supplements with Shaklee I have renewed energy & spirit to continue improving my own health and helping others.  See what I’m doing here.

I’ve had more energy and more hours in my day then I have in 10 years!  I simply WANT to get things done.  I’ve been able to make clear choices on the next steps in my life and that includes losing the final 15 lbs that REALLY need to go!

So I will only be eating what I would feed my children.  I will not set a different standard for myself.  I will be the role model they deserve in health, business & life.  Today is the day I Get With the Program!

Mission: Prevent Carcinogens Invading Your Family

February 13th, 2010
February is National Cancer Prevention Month and while most everyone focuses on diet, exercise, and quitting smoking as the core ways to prevent cancer – they’re forgetting another pillar of prevention. Reducing exposure to carcinogens in our everyday environments.
At Mission: Clean Kids we know you can’t be perfect.  Our world is filled with harmful things.  Our choice in our home is Shaklee when we think about avoiding carcinogens.  They have BPA free containers for all of their products.  The also test EVERYTHING hundreds of times to assure the ingredients do not contain carcinogens.  From make-up to cleaners to daily vitamins…we are assured we are not ingesting or absorbing any carcinogens we we use Shaklee.  Considering I lost my Dad just over a year ago to cancer and my grandparents both experienced cancer…I’m willing to take the extra step to help keep myself and my children as safe as possible.  SEE SHAKLEE SAFETY HERE

Hundreds of carcinogenic chemicals have been identified and, unfortunately, they’re quite common in our air, water, food, and everyday products. Here are some easy ways you can reduce your exposure to them.

1. Purge Plastics. Reduce exposure to carcinogens in plastics used for storing and serving food. Avoid microwaving food in plastic or putting plastics in the dishwasher, because heat may cause chemicals to leach out. And opt for safer plastics – those marked (usually at the bottom of a container) 1, 2, 4 or 5. The plastics to avoid are those numbered 3, 6 and 7 (unless they are also marked ‘BPA-free’).”

2. Eat Healthy. Opt for more organic, whole foods. Ease up on animal fats. And, start reading labels. You are what you eat!

3. Manage Pests Safely. Instead of using toxic pesticides, prevent pests by keeping a clean home. Prevent weeds by using mulch and maintaining a healthy lawn. If you do have a problem, opt for non-toxic methods before reaching for chemicals.

4. Detoxify Your Beauty Routine. Personal care products contain a laundry list of suspect chemicals. Reduce how much you use and to use Skin Deep to find the safest products. You can also print the Healthy Child Pocket Guide to help you on the go.

5. Clean Without Toxic Chemicals. Use gentle castile soap and water – these have been shown to keep surfaces as free of bacteria as antibacterial soaps do. In fact, antibacterial soaps and disposable wipes have not proven any more effective than regular soap in preventing infections among average consumers, but raise significant concerns about developing resistant bacteria. Opt for simple kitchen ingredients for basic cleaning, like vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda – or use natural, non-toxic cleaners instead.
