Mission: Ask Permission

August 1st, 2010

Just got a phone call from the Mom down the street :)

I love that families on the block have gotten to know us well enough that they ask permission before giving our kids “stuff”.  Sure, maybe some of them think I’m overprotective, but if you’ve ever watched your child suffer from anything (an allergic reaction, asthma, or seizures like our youngest) you know how I feel.  Even the school nurse thinks I’m a little nuts!

The school nurse and many parents have asked me if I’m serious when I want to know what my child has been given to eat…even better if they ask before it is given.  Really is one Chips Ahoy cookie, one popsicle brand popsicle, one bag of doritos going to hurt my children?  Maybe not.  Maybe so.  What I do know is that the accumulative effect of all the chemicals in those foods can’t be good and if I don’t know what’s going in then I can’t be sure what’s going on with my child if they don’t feel good.

I know for absolute sure that dyes drive my younger one CRAZY!  Too much junky carbs makes my older one CRANKY!

I also know that since eliminating most of these things, with the exception of an occasional birthday party or bbq, our children have not been sick.  Not at all.  Sure the sniffles for 24 hours, but not really sick.  Do you know many families that have children ages 6 and 7 that haven’t been to the dr in 3 years?  (Yes, we went to get the kids physicals for school and yes, they meet all criteria for “well” children.)

Our family loves to help other families experience this same joy of being well year round. Are you ready to work towards your child being the healthiest on the block?

Mission: Choices on the Go

July 31st, 2010

We traveled this past week as a family, in a car, across the country.  Believe it or not we still love each other, had NO fighting, minimal whining and lots of laughing.  Even the dog came with us!

I firmly believe that one of the reasons we all stayed so cheerful is that we didn’t let our nutrition slide (too much).  We weren’t perfect.  We enjoyed wedding cake.  We went out to the local ice cream shack.  Ate too many carbs.  Should have had more veggies.  But overall we had a good time, avoided many food dyes, artificial sugars and didn’t need to stop at any drive thrus!

Here are two of our favorite snacks that kept us going through the long week:

Go Picnics are similar to a Lunchable, but without the chemicals, dyes and artificial “stuff”. The kids enjoyed the tattoos that came in the box too.

Hemp Bars satisfy the whole family with a great texture and aren’t messy like other bars. Did you know many mainstream granola bars have aspartame – we avoid aspartame whenever possible!

Mission: Learn Easy Tips for Cleaner Living

July 7th, 2010

There’s no way to know it all, especially when it comes to clean living.  So whenever I run across easy (practical) tips for making our clean choices easy, I just have to share!

Why these tips are important to us:

We buy a lot of fruits and veggies.

We hate chemicals/toxins.

You do too, right?  So enjoy your bananas longer, your peppers sweeter and your ants going away – naturally.

  • Take your bananas apart when you get home. They won’t ripen as fast.

  • Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter for eating, 4 bumps are better for cooking.

  • Put cayenne pepper in your garden to keep squirrels and rabbits away.

  • Get rid of ants with cornmeal, they take it home, but can’t digest it and therefore go to insect heaven.

Do you have a tip that works for you in the kitchen/home that might help us out?  Share! Share! Share!

What do we wash our vegetables with?  H2 from Shaklee…it also cleans our entire home for over a year for just $10!
