Mission: Find a Safe Sunscreen

June 9th, 2010

Finding a safe sunscreen is more than making sure you don’t get burned. Did you know that the EWG only endorses 39 sunscreens out of the 500 on the market and that using anything over a 50 spf is pointless?

Our family is fair skinned.  We’ve been to Disney, a cruise, in the neighbors pool all day, at baseball games and many more summer fun activities with NO SUNBURN since choosing Shaklee’s Enfuselle sunscreen.

Many sunscreens actually cause cell mutations by excessive Vitamin A and other harmful ingredients.  Not Enfuselle!

We love how long it lasts too.  Just like all other Shaklee products, Enfuselle Sunscreen is concentrated, non-greasy and WORKS!

Check out more information here, but when you’re try it out, email us to receive your sunscreen at retail price with no additional tax or shipping! This is a Mission: Clean Kids deal only – We want your family to be safe!

Mission: Celebrate the Ocean at Home

June 8th, 2010

The kids are home with me for the ENTIRE summer.  We’ll be taking a few vacations, but these first 7 weeks it’s all about me and kids.  I thought we could make it fun by focusing on a topic every week.  Julianne picked our first week’s focus: The Ocean!

No need to overplan (um, the type A personality in me almost did that).  Instead, just go with the flow and incorporate some new concepts into each day.

Monday: Went to the library and checked out a bunch of ocean and ocean animal books.  Took time to look closely at the pictures and learn some new facts.

Tuesday: Fish shaped fish sticks (from Whole Foods) for lunch with a salad.  More looking at the books.  The kids are listing 10 new things they learned about the ocean.  We also have a computer program, Spelling Accelerator, that we make our own lists of words to learn how to spell and define.  We’re making our Ocean list today! Since we’re going on the computer I will most likely be teaching them about the oil disaster, courtesy of BP.

Wednesday: Octopus hotdogs (google it for how to make your hotdogs look like an octopus and don’t forget to choose nitrate free dogs) for lunch with starfish mac and cheese (going to make it from scratch). Steamed spinach for our seaweed :)   We’ll learn about how our trash is making a garbage circle in the Ocean and we’ll reinforce why we choose Shaklee Get Clean in our home, not only because it works, but it helps eliminate garbage.

Thursday:  A trip downtown Chicago to the Shedd aquarium.

Friday: Dessert day with sandy pudding. (crushed cookie wafers, pudding and star jelly candies).  Also going to learn more from our library books and create a fun craft…the kids haven’t decided what kind of craft they want to make.  I’m thinking seashell necklaces for the whole family!

Do you have any great Ocean ideas?

Mission: Celebrate My Birthday w/Out the Crankies!

June 7th, 2010

Do you ever notice that by the end of a birthday party the kids are running around crazy and you’re are so glad they are going home! You know they are going to crash from the sugar in their system and you’re happy you won’t be around to see the melt downs.  It’s just something we, as parents, learn to accept on the party days.

What’s interesting is the effect of going dye free, artificial flavor free, preservative free in our home. Our systems are so used to having real food that any day that we decide to eat a little too much of the chemicals, we get a crash of the crankies in our house.  This includes my husband and I!

This happens on the days when I think it might be easier to just get in the car and go and I’m sure we’ll find something decent to eat while we’re gone (NOT!).  It can happen too on the days that the neighbors ask if they can give the kids a popsicle and I say yes…chances are they give them two.  ICK!

So today, as I celebrate my birthday, I will make a conscious effort to enjoy real food all day. This way it can be a day long of celebration without the crash of the crankies!  What’s on the menu?  Homemade lasagna and carrot cake.  YUM!

P.S. My other gift? An escape to our whirlpool tub with NO interruptions and Enfuselle.  My skin will feel amazing!

Mission: Fuel Up for Fun!

June 6th, 2010

Awesome! Today I ran my first 5k and Julianne & Johanna ran in the kids dash.  The event benefited Hope Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald house in Oak Lawn, IL.  I’m not a big fan of McDonald’s, but I love their charity of the Ronald McDonald houses.  We used their hospitality quite a bit when Johanna was in the hospital for a month after her first seizure.  It’s only fitting that I would support their cause…especially during this week – the week we eliminated her prescription seizure meds!

Preparing for today was fun!  I don’t mean the running part.  That was not my favorite part in the beginning.  However, packing up for the day was so easy and the girls were so good.  That’s what happens when you fuel up for fun without using artificial junk!

This morning:

People ask me all the time if I really take the time to make sure that we have healthy snacks/options around 99% of the time the answer is YES! In fact, my mom and husband ate breakfast right from our van console…which was not stocked for today – the picture above is how it always looks!

It’s ready to go with:

C’mon, you can do it!  Get in the habit of keeping the healthy stuff in the car and the drive thru crankies will be a thing of the past!
