Mission: See Your Future – What are you Talking About?

May 7th, 2010

So I’m sitting at a Panera right now and a quote from one of our team members jumped into my head.  It goes something like: “If you don’t take time for wellness now you will have to take time for illness later”

This rings true right now as I can over hear (ok I’m a little nosey) two women in the 60’s talking about all their “issues”.  Migraines, blurred vision, lack of energy, blood pressure, and thyroid…well, at least that’s all for now (in the first 5 minutes!).

When I “grow up” I want to be talking with my friends about the vacation I just took, my kids graduating from college, my new swanky piece of jewelry, the volunteer work I’m doing and the people I’m helping, including my family.

I wish the same for my children.  We already know too many kids who have what are considered “normal” health issues and miss school way too much.  Not to mention all the fun they are missing!

Life should be about living better and better each day, especially as we become wiser.  I try to make time for our family’s wellness now to assure we don’t have to over dedicate time to illness in the future.  Are they choices you’re making today moving you in the right direction for tomorrow (and your children’s tomorrow)?

Cheers to Healthy Days to Come!

Update: As I finish writing this snippet the ladies have moved onto another topic…nursing homes.  I think I need to move seats so I can enjoy a positive meal with an old friend.

Mission: Share with Kids Your “WHY” for Choices

May 4th, 2010

People often ask me how I get my kids to go along with the choices we’re making in our home. Whether it’s about eating raw vegetables everyday, skipping the ice cream truck or asking them to give me a little space when I chat with a parent in our home about getting healthy.

The answer is simple: I tell them why!

I tried to refrain from “because I’m the Mom” or “that’s just how it is” or “Mom wants to/has to work today”.

I simply tell them what the benefit to them is if I can get my job done.

Together we made a 2010 vision board of goals. Everybody got their own section, searched for pictures of their dreams & goals, and posted them on the board. It hands in the laundry room where everyone has to pass through everyday.

If things get a little hectic in the home (which of course happens!) we simply talk about WHY we are doing what we are doing.

Julianne has the following dreams: swimming with dolphins and legoland in CA. Johanna wants to spend a fancy weekend in downtown Chicago and visit Mickey Mouse.

To help them make their dreams come true we need two things:

1. A healthy family to enjoy the activities.
2. Money to fund the adventures.

Here at Mission: Clean Kids our family enjoys sharing our journey and choices that we are making to work towards our family dreams and goals. There is rarely a struggle in the home when it comes to healthy choices because we have our WHY!

So tell me…why are you making the choices you are making everyday? Are they getting you towards your goals? Is your family involved and supportive? Are you collaborating towards goals rather than frustrating each other? Sitting and talking with your family and children about what they dream about and how you can work together to reach goals is an amazing experience and I can’t wait to continue to see what develops as my children mature.

UPDATE: Just walked through the laundry room and Julianne (7 years old) just wrote on our family goal board – “2010 is SO MUCH FUN!” That is an awesome proud Mom moment to know I’m helping her make dreams come true :)

Mission: Get Dirty in the Kitchen – Accomplished

February 13th, 2010
Watch out for flying cookie dough!

Yep, I told everyone we were making Valentine’s day cookies.

Did you know that one notch the wrong way on a mixer can cause a disaster?

My kids went running out of the kitchen as cookie dough went flying everywhere.  Good thing I’m a Mom who can laugh at herself!

A bag of store bought cookies could never bring this many smiles or memories!

Of course I’ll be using Shaklee to clean it all up in a snap!

Mission: Prevent Carcinogens Invading Your Family

February 13th, 2010
February is National Cancer Prevention Month and while most everyone focuses on diet, exercise, and quitting smoking as the core ways to prevent cancer – they’re forgetting another pillar of prevention. Reducing exposure to carcinogens in our everyday environments.
At Mission: Clean Kids we know you can’t be perfect.  Our world is filled with harmful things.  Our choice in our home is Shaklee when we think about avoiding carcinogens.  They have BPA free containers for all of their products.  The also test EVERYTHING hundreds of times to assure the ingredients do not contain carcinogens.  From make-up to cleaners to daily vitamins…we are assured we are not ingesting or absorbing any carcinogens we we use Shaklee.  Considering I lost my Dad just over a year ago to cancer and my grandparents both experienced cancer…I’m willing to take the extra step to help keep myself and my children as safe as possible.  SEE SHAKLEE SAFETY HERE

Hundreds of carcinogenic chemicals have been identified and, unfortunately, they’re quite common in our air, water, food, and everyday products. Here are some easy ways you can reduce your exposure to them.

1. Purge Plastics. Reduce exposure to carcinogens in plastics used for storing and serving food. Avoid microwaving food in plastic or putting plastics in the dishwasher, because heat may cause chemicals to leach out. And opt for safer plastics – those marked (usually at the bottom of a container) 1, 2, 4 or 5. The plastics to avoid are those numbered 3, 6 and 7 (unless they are also marked ‘BPA-free’).”

2. Eat Healthy. Opt for more organic, whole foods. Ease up on animal fats. And, start reading labels. You are what you eat!

3. Manage Pests Safely. Instead of using toxic pesticides, prevent pests by keeping a clean home. Prevent weeds by using mulch and maintaining a healthy lawn. If you do have a problem, opt for non-toxic methods before reaching for chemicals.

4. Detoxify Your Beauty Routine. Personal care products contain a laundry list of suspect chemicals. Reduce how much you use and to use Skin Deep to find the safest products. You can also print the Healthy Child Pocket Guide to help you on the go.

5. Clean Without Toxic Chemicals. Use gentle castile soap and water – these have been shown to keep surfaces as free of bacteria as antibacterial soaps do. In fact, antibacterial soaps and disposable wipes have not proven any more effective than regular soap in preventing infections among average consumers, but raise significant concerns about developing resistant bacteria. Opt for simple kitchen ingredients for basic cleaning, like vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda – or use natural, non-toxic cleaners instead.
